Restoration of the chapel
Good news for history and heritage lovers: the restoration of the 19th century chapel on the Oud-Poelgeest estate is about to start! After a long period of preparation, all the necessary permits have been obtained and the tendering of the work can begin.
A New Future for the Chapel
Marcel van Dijk, responsible for the restoration of buildings within the Oud-Poelgeest Heritage Foundation, is enthusiastic:
"The building is in need of a thorough restoration. After the work, the chapel will not only come into its own as a historical monument, but will also be given a new function within the estate. We want to involve this special building more in the experience of Oud-Poelgeest."
The chapel, built in 1857 and designed by the famous architect JD Zocher, has a rich and sometimes turbulent history. Once built as a chapel by the then resident Gerrit Willink, it later served as a hunting lodge, temporary housing for Hungarian students and even as a squat. Now the chapel is on the eve of a new chapter.
Historical and Sustainable Management
The restoration of the chapel is a beautiful example of the mission of the Stichting Erfgoed Oud-Poelgeest, namely the preservation and sustainable development of the estate. Historical integrity and environmentally conscious management are central to this. Until recently, the chapel was still used as a storage space and meeting location for forest volunteers, but they have now moved into the Oranjerie.
After the restoration, the chapel offers opportunities for new activities that bring the public closer to the estate. Think of meetings, events or even overnight stays in this unique historical setting. This way, the chapel will be preserved and it will also become a valuable addition to the facilities at Oud-Poelgeest.
The restoration of the chapel contributes to the accessibility and museum value of the estate. Would you also like to contribute to the preservation of this special place? Stichting Erfgoed Oud-Poelgeest is happy to receive support from visitors and donors through the friends program. Together we ensure that this unique heritage can be experienced for generations to come.

Start of restoration
On February 20, 2025, the time had come: the start of the restoration of the 19th-century chapel. Alderman Kees Oudendijk and board member Marcel van Dijk of the Stichting Erfgoed Oud-Poelgeest threw the stones from the battlements of the roof of the chapel. Many spectators watched the scene and, while enjoying a drink and a snack, the representatives of the province, the municipality, local residents, the press and volunteers of the Foundation were able to talk about the plans for the chapel.
There will be regular updates and photos on this page about the progress of the project that will be completed this summer. The estate will then have another beautifully restored building.
